THE FOUNDATION PROGRAMME
Getting the Foundation job you want has always been competitive. The foundation programme application score (FPAS) is used to rank final year medical students nationally, determining the deanery, the hospital and the individual jobs you will rotate through in your F1 and F2 years. Getting a good score is important as it increases your chances of securing the geographical area, hospital or specialty that you want.
You now have to sit a Situational Judgement Test which replaced the seven or so short answer "white space" questions from previous years. This SJT exam is very different to any other test you will have taken in the past. It requires you to judge which of several responses are most appropriate in a common clinical setting - there's often not a simple right and wrong answer. We provide guidance to how to approach these questions to maximise your marks on the SJT. The rest of the application is otherwise similar to previous years with a few small updates.
Preparing for the application will, as always, provide a challenge for you in your final year of medical school on top of everything else you have going on.
We want to help. We’ll use this site to provide advice from junior doctors who previously scored highly in their foundation programme application and from GPs who have sat many Situational Judgment Tests. This advice is unofficial, but hopefully helpful. We’re here to help if we can, so contact us if you have any questions and we’ll do our best to find out an answer for you.
